Inside one of the patient wings of a former Alabama State Hospital, at sunrise.

This asylum opened in 1861 and remained in operation for over 100 years. In 2010, the University of Alabama purchased the property and demolished most of the hospital's wings, keeping only the administration section of this historic relic.

Photo: "A Morning At Peace"

I haven't been awake photographing sunrise in a few months, so naturally, I miss mornings like this peaceful one from back in February.

I set my alarm with the hopes I would see low fog on the webcams when I woke. Despite there being no fog, I crawled out of bed and made the trek to the north bay anyway. Funny thing is, 95% of the time, it's worth getting up early and taking a chance, but when we are lying in our cozy beds it never seems that way.

You can't get the shot if you're not there.

I caught a gorgeous sunrise from the Marin Headlands last Friday.

When I woke at 5am, I expected to see the webcams covered in fog, but the fog had retreated during the middle of the night. I headed for the Headlands anyway, because I was in the mood for an adventure.

When I arrived, at least 10 other photographers were set-up and waiting for sunrise. As you can see, fog or not, it was still a beautiful morning.

Sunrise over San Francisco, November 2013

To say my life has been hectic lately would be a bit of an understatement, but even amongst the craziness, I know that eventually things will slow down and I'll get to plant my feet back on solid ground.

I did manage to squeeze in a bit of camera time on Saturday shooting sunrise with a few friends. The conditions weren't exactly what we'd hoped for, but it was nice to be out and feeling the crisp wind on my cheeks at 5am.
