Badwater, Death Valley

There is something very special about the way the light hits the Mesquite Dunes early in the morning...

I have definitely been enjoying all the landscape shooting I've been doing lately, but I really miss photographing abandoned buildings.

Solana Beach Sunset, 12/29/12.
Went down to the beach with my Dad, while visiting for the holidays, to watch the sunset and wound up spending most of the shoot dodging sneaky waves. It was worth it.

Recently I've been experimenting with different processing techniques. While editing this image, I added the 'Spring' filter from the Landscape tab in +onOne Software's Perfect Effects 4, which added a slight glow on the dunes.

On this particular morning, we made the trek out to the dunes, despite the lack of clouds. For some reason, though I shot here during my last trip in 2010, I forgot how long the hike to the untouched dunes actually took. (Most are covered in footprints.) After walking for around 30 minutes, I decided to stop and take a shot here I blue hour was over. Shortly after I finished the final shot, the sun was up and lighting the dunes with an amber glow.

One this particular day, we had shot a cloudless sunrise at Zabriskie Point and feared we'd have the same cloudless skies for sunset out at The Racetrack, but we decided to go anyway. Thankfully, the evening turned out better than expected.
By sunset, we were the only people on the playa and though it was chilly, there was virtually no wind. A few small clouds moved in over the mountains as the sun went down and lit up in hues of pink and lavender. Taking our chances definitely paid off.

Since my last exploring trip to the South in October, I haven't shot many abandoned locations, which means that I'm running low on new urban decay images to post. Interestingly enough, I have a dozen or so landscape images fighting for time on G+.

Sun beams break through the redwoods at the Henry Cowell State Park near Santa Cruz, California.
In a few hours I'm hoping on a plane to visit family. Have a great week and enjoy whichever holiday you celebrate!
Photo: "Pigeon Point Lighthouse"
I met up with a few photographers in Santa Cruz for a photowalk on Saturday. We had a great morning shooting in the redwoods, but I wasn't able to stay for the sunset. I began the drive home on Hwy 1 and made a quick stop at the lighthouse when I noticed the sky collecting color.

I left San Francisco before the sun came up last Wednesday, to head south for the holiday. Just as I got out of the drizzly weather, I was greeted with a gorgeous, orange sunrise followed by a vibrant rainbow on the I-5.

I got back to San Francisco this morning after a weekend in San Diego visiting family for the holiday.
I drove most of the way last night, camped out in the Subaru and finished the drive this morning. The first hour of the drive was a bit boring, but I happily arrived in Santa Nella, one of the few decent stops along the I-5, during blue hour, so I picked out a spot along a farm road and shot the sunrise in the cold crisp air for an hour. It certainly helped to break up the early morning drive.
