The Presidio of San Francisco was turned over to the United States by the Spanish in 1848. More than one hundred years later, in 1989, Congress voted to end its military operations. In 1994, it was turned over to the National Park Service.

Mare Island Nocturnes features fine art photography, done at night, utilizing long time exposures, by photographers from all over the SF Bay Area, many on return nocturnal “tours of duty.” Chris Rasmussen, a member of the Save Our Sail Advisory Group, and one of the Jurors of the exhibit, has described the exhibit as “A marvelous array of images demonstrating the stark beauty of Mare Island, its industrious past now locked up in a great stillness.” We hope the public will come see these images of a seldom-seen side of the former Mare Island Shipyard, and help celebrate The Nocturnes Twentieth Anniversary - and five years on Mare Island!

This Model Industries Building on Alcatraz was one of two buildings on the island where the prisoners could have jobs. Working was surprisingly, an escape for many of the prisoners. It helped to combat the monotony and isolation of prison life and gave inmates work experience for their life after release.

Photo: "Sea Shadow"
For the second time in a month, an article regarding the scrapping of the Sea Shadow has surfaced. Might it be the last attempt to find a non-profit to take the ship?
The Sea Shadow (IX-529) was an experimental stealth ship built for the U.S. Navy in 1984 by Lockheed Corporation, an American aerospace manufacturer. She was constructed in Redwood City, California inside the Hughes Mining Barge to conceal the project. The ship was used in secret to determine the effectivemes of stealth technology on naval vessels. In 1993 the project was publicly exposed.
